Back to Beauty Basics, by Mel S
One commonly overlooked point when it comes to beauty is having good skin. While it is understandable that hormonal imbalances and stress can cause acne, scarring and uneven skin tone, much can be done to remedy the situation--and no, we are not talking about slapping on five inches of foundation in hopes that your scars can’t be seen. Trust me, they can.

While the normal skincare routine of cleanse-tone-moisturise has been drilled into our heads, we should also not forget several other things should be done regularly to have a glowing and clear complexion.

Cleanse, but not Strip
Goat’s milk soap

While we all know the importance of cleansing, sometimes it’s easy to believe that when your skin feels tight and stretched, that’s good.

It isn’t.

That tightness and over-clean feeling could mean that the soap or facial foam you’re using is too strong and is stripping your skin of natural oils. Opt for a cleanser that has moisturising properties, like goat’s milk soap, which is touted as being perfect for sensitive, pigmented and dry skin. A big bonus is that these soaps are made largely of natural ingredients--if you wouldn’t eat something, why would you want to put it on your skin?

Scrub-a-dub-dub
Salt scrub

Salt scrubs remove dead skin cells that leave your skin dull; they’re even better when Dead Sea bath salts are used. Believed to help skin regeneration, cleanse pores and firm-up skin tissues, Dead Sea salts are said to be mineral-rich in addition to having skin-polishing properties.

Moisturise-all over!
Victoria’s Secret hydrating body lotion

In our hot and humid weather it’s easy to believe that additional moisture is unnecessary. However, applying body lotion after your shower is a must if you want skin that’s soft to the touch. Concentrate on areas most susceptible to dryness, such as elbows and knees. And with so many scents to choose from – including strawberries & champagne, and vanilla lace — these lotions also double up as a perfect daytime perfume.

Put on a Mask
Chocolate mask

Facial masks give your skin an added boost of moisture, while whitening extracts can help brighten a dull and lacklustre complexion if applied once or twice a week. They are also a brilliant way of relaxing — so lie back in a comfortable position, slap on a mask, and enjoy the silence for 20 minutes or so. And if that mask is a Chocolate mask, you’d want to be wary of people licking your face while you snooze!

Eye Care
Clinique All About Eye moisturiser

When you’re sleep-deprived and stressed out, a sure-fire sign is under-eye circles, shadows and puffiness. Not enough people realise how important eye-care is, and also how much more sensitive the skin around the area is. Pick a moisturiser that is ophthalmologically approved to ensure that it’s gentle enough to be applied around the thin, sensitive skin; also, make sure it’s not too rich in order to avoid milia.
